The nominations for the 2026 Oscars were announced on January 22, with Ryan Coogler’s Sinners setting the record for the most nominations. Sinners, a story about vampirism, race, and colonialism set in 1930s Mississippi, received 16 nominations, surpassing Titanic, All About Eve, and La La Land, each having 14 nominations. One Battle After Another is a close second behind Sinners with 13 nominations.
Additionally, a new category was introduced this year: Best Casting. This category recognizes the role of casting directors in film production. This is the newest addition to the Oscar awards since Best Animated Film in 2002.
Sinners is the most Oscar-nominated film in movie history, earning nominations in Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Original Song, Costume Design, Casting, Original Score, Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, Visual Effects, and Sound. According to Variety, Ruth E. Carter, the movie’s costume designer, has also become the most nominated Black woman in Oscar history.
Alongside Marty Supreme getting a Best Picture nomination, its star Timothée Chalamet is nominated for Best Actor. This would make him the youngest male actor with 3 Oscar nominations at just age 30.
Sentimental Value’s entire main cast was also nominated: Renate Reinsve for Best Actress, Stellan Skarsgård for Best Supporting Actor, and Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter for Best Supporting Actress. This Norwegian movie, alongside Brazil’s The Secret Agent, is not only nominated for Best International Film, but Best Picture as well.
Many people were left surprised when, despite its global success, Wicked: For Good was completely snubbed at the Oscars, receiving zero nominations this year. Wicked had received 10 nominations in 2024, including Best Picture.
Meanwhile, numerous people are hoping that Sinners completely sweeps the Oscars. The film achieved major success in the box office, and has grossed $365 million globally. It’s the second highest grossing horror film in the US behind It (2017), but because It (2017) is a remake, this makes Sinners the highest grossing original horror film in the US.
From historical dramas such as Hamnet to gothic classics like Frankenstein, the 2026 Academy Awards nominations have finally arrived after months of predictions and debates.
