The Future Educators Club at Volunteer State Community College is accepting children’s book donations now until Tuesday, March 12, at 2 p.m.
Books can be donated by being placed in marked boxes in Caudill Hall and Ramer Hall.
All books will be donated to local preschools and daycares, according to Vol State’s website.
“The Future Educators book drive is a way for the club to become active on campus while collecting items for the community,” said early childhood education faculty Stacy Nieman.
The Future Educators book drive is an annual event, and is in its second year, said Nieman.
Nieman also said that, “Local Head Start Programs and child development centers to provide care for lower income families,” will benefit from this drive.
For the Future Educators book drive, people should donate, “gently used children’s books,” said Nieman.
“Since Head Start and child development centers provide care for young children, we are targeting birth to age 8,” Nieman mentioned as a specific age group that this drive is being targeted.
If a person wishes to donate books, Nieman said that you can donate them in boxes that have a picture of Dr. Seuss on them.
“Books are important to young children because it encourages development in all domains. When adults share stories, read books, talk, and sing to young children, it impacts the child in many ways. For example, reading promotes brain development and imagination along with the development of social emotional skills. Books also help encourage language development and early literacy skills,” explained Nieman in describing how important books are to young children.
Nieman had two quotes that she used pertaining to the Future Educators book drive. “A Dr. Seuss quote comes to mind, ‘The more that you read, the more you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.’ And Neil Gaiman’s quote, ‘The simplest way to make sure that we raise literate children is to show them that reading is a pleasurable activity. And that means finding books that they enjoy, giving them access to those books, and letting them read them.’”
