Success seminar to help students prepare for college

By Ryan Hanna

Volunteer State Community College is hosting a three-part college success seminar for its students. The next session will be at the Rochelle Center in the Thigpen Library Mar. 16, from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

The seminar aims to help students stay organized as well as create habits that will last through the college years. The second section, however will cover midterm exams as well as how to handle outside obligations such as sports or internships.

The event is sponsored by TRiO, The Learning Commons, Diversity and Inclusion, and Vol State’s Thigpen Library.

“There’s a few stakeholders that are trying to put together what we hope will be an opportunity for students to kind of polish up on some of the skills that either they may be needing some help on or if they’re already good maybe they can get better at what they’re doing,” said Jeff King, the Manager of Diversity and Inclusion at Vol State.

While the upcoming session in March will focus on the middle of the semester, the final session will focus on final exams and registration for the fall semester.

“How do you study for your finals, how do you prepare for the next semester, including registration and talking to your advisor, that kind of stuff,” said Diana Hardin, the reading and writing specialist at the Learning Commons.

The study skills workshop hasn’t been getting the in-person attendance that King and Hardin would have liked, though. King says that it has a lot to do with the recent closure of the Vol State Grill as well as the lingering effects of the pandemic.

“I’m worried that because we don’t have a cafeteria anymore students don’t even look at that area like they used to. It would be packed here at 12 noon on a Tuesday or a Wednesday and almost every cafeteria seat would be full,” said King.
