Poem Spotlight: Waiting in Line

Step in line,
It is now open.
It’s your turn in five,
The attendant has spoken.

The gears turn,
And there they climb.
You feel your stomach churn,
And now it’s four minutes time.

It’s huge, you say,
And it goes up and down.
Over and over at bay,
And upside down.

You shake, you swallow,
And you’re not ready.
You don’t follow,
Why it fails to be steady.

Three minutes till,
You hear the screams.
While standing still,
You wonder what they mean.

Joy and fear,
In a collected breath.
As it races past you hear,
And it seems like sudden death.

You can’t, you exclaim,
And you express your doubts.
Two until the insane,
And you’re persistent to clock out.

I hold your hand,
Because I simply understand.
Because once you’re on,
You don’t know when again you’ll stand.

Minute one,
It’s the countdown.
There’s a young soul,
Ready to plummet the town.

I tap his shoulder,
He turns around.
I say you need a soldier
To guide you from the ground.

His brown eyes glint gold,
In the afternoon sun.
Full of life, and bold,
Before it began.

He shares a smile,
And he states:

“We’ve all been waiting awhile to be the bait.

It’s okay to be scared,
It’s okay to cry.
Because in the end, it’s rare
To not make it through alive.

It is huge,
And it does go up and down.
Over and over at bay,
And upside down.

But if this chance is not taken,
We will never find reason.
It is not mistaken,
That we are meant to be human.”

I wave, heart soaring,
As you take rise above.
I hope you know it’s you, I’m so proud of.

Through the screams and the fear,
And the seamless tears,
I hope you can laugh,
And hear the wind in your ears.

As time flies,
I hope you can holler to the skies.
Being human is wild,
But it really is the best ride.
