Vol State’s Wonderland 2025

Professor Brendan Brassil and the students of Volunteer State Community College put on two glamorous showings of the classic fairytale, Alice in Wonderland, on October 9th and 10th in Caudill Hall. The showings heavily utilized audience interactions by having the audience make environmental noises during certain parts, such as scene changes and narration. They also brought members of the audience on stage, serving as jurors for Alice’s trial scene. Although the play was relatively short, it was around 45 minutes. The audience interaction and attention-grabbing performances of the actors & actresses told as much story as your average play.

Every performer played their role innately and colorfully well; however, Vol State’s rendition of the Queen of Hearts by Ava Ploof stole most of the stage during her scenes. Her eloquent performance was best captured through her articulate delivery, and her ability to engage with audience members, such as children and the elderly brought onto the stage, while maintaining the role of the Queen of Hearts.

The showing had many points of audience interactions, including the audience’s environmental noises, audience members could receive ribbons from the Caucus race in their participation of stomping their feet to imitate running or being invited on to the stage to acts as attendants to the Mad Hatter’s Tea party, serve as Goals for the Mad Queen during the Croquet Match, or act as jurors who “decided” the fate of Alice. (The Jurors’ decision serves more as inconsequential advice as the Queen of Hearts’ Monarchy remains absolute.)

Overall, the showings display how hard the Vol State student body can work for something great, and each part remains as important as the next.

“Come support live theatre, its escapism at its finest and we love doing it.”

– Brendan Brassil
