Seven Volunteer State Community College basketball players, four from the men’s team and three from the ladies’, were ruled academically ineligible over the winter break.

Included in that group is the nation’s leading junior college men’s scorer, George Stanberry.  None of the men, Stanberry, Devon Chapman, Daverix Cleves, and Jordan Lockridge will be eligible to return this year.

On the ladies side, Erica Mason, is lost for the year while LaMonica Mintlow and Titania Lavender were eligible to return last Wednesday.

“It was a challenge,” said ladies’ Coach Otis Key.  “They made mistakes and we will make adjustments and move on.”

“They just couldn’t get the work done,” said men’s Coach Rusty Melvin of his four players.  “That will happen to freshmen, and three of them were freshmen. The other player was a sophomore who just didn’t get a class done.  But it has been a struggle for years for him.”

Chapman, Cleves and Lockridge will be eligible to return to play next year, provided their academic standing improves.
