The Volunteer State Community College will host the annual Spring Music Department Showcase April 26, at 7:30 p.m., in the Caudill auditorium.

This is the music department’s biggest event of the year.

In the first half of the event, several groups from different areas of the department perform. Then the year’s songwriters who are featured on the department’s spring CD are the focus for the second havoc of the event.

The performing groups are: Bluegrass Ablaze (Vol State’s bluegrass ensemble), VSCC’s commercial music ensemble, Vol State Jazz, and the Showstoppers.

The featured songwriters are: David Nipper, Ean Boyd, Lane Thompson, Pete Melvin, Hope Williford, Justin French, Michael Mullins, Teresa Combs, Mark Barnett, Rachel Schmieder, Aldo Cono, and Mandy Cook.

“The spring show always is about spotlighting the songwriters that were featured on the spring CD, so it’s mostly about the spring CD,” said Music Department Chair Benjamin Graves.

Music faculty Lynn Petersone said the spring CD is made at Vol State, giving music students the opportunity to gain experience in different aspects of the music industry.

“We write the songs in class with our students, then we have a recording studio next-door where students training to be engineers record the album, students are the musicians on the album. Then when it’s finished, we have our own machines that print the CDs, print the labels on them, packs them in shrink wrap like a real CD, ready to go. We do the whole process here. We want to show off the fact that we’re capable of taking it from the beginning to the end,” said Peterson.

The Showstoppers will have a “The Greatest Showman”- themed performance.

“If I’m here, I’ll probably come because I like music,” said sophomore Fran Shepherd.

The event and a hard copy of the spring CD are free for those with their VSCC ID, and it is $5 for those without it.

Individual songs from the album are available on iTunes.
