Volunteer State Community College’s Campus Activities Board will be hosting a social café event in the Mary Nichols Dining Room A Jan. 23 at 12:45 p.m.

The event titled “Wanna Make S’more Friends?” will be open to any students interested in becoming more involved in student life on campus.

“The idea is to spark a conversation about this event and if they would like to see more events of its kind,” according to an email from Crystal Sloss, chairperson of the Campus Activities Board.

A table will be set up with ingredient baggies containing graham crackers, marshmallows, and Hershey’s chocolate. Attendees will then have the opportunity to mix and mingle with their peers while enjoying s’mores.

“The table will have CAB materials and a sign-up sheet to drum up interest and get students excited about CAB and how they can get connected this semester,” according to an email from Tabitha Sherrell, coordinator of student activities.

In addition to promoting student involvement, Sherrell explained how CAB cafés are used to advertise upcoming events on campus.

The tagline on each ingredient bag will read “Wanna Make S’More Friends?” and the back will advertise the Welcome Back Involvement Fair scheduled for Jan. 25.

This CAB café event is not the first of its kind at Vol State. Student Government Association President Caitlyn Ellis discussed the success of previous CAB cafés.

“They give us a chance to talk to students, and then give students a chance to talk to each other because nobody ever does that without phones anymore,” said Ellis.

Sloss believes this event is a great way for students to begin the spring semester.

“If you can make some solid friends in the beginning, you then have people to help hold you accountable and motivate you through the semester,” Sloss wrote.
