Volunteer State Community College will host the International Film Series, “Stairway to Heaven,” Jan. 24, at 5:30 pm in Caudill Hall.
This film is a romance, fantasy, drama, comedy, and war genre movie about a British wartime aviator who cheats death and must argue for his life before a celestial court, according to IMDb.
“This movie really tells two interwoven stories,” Vol State’s English instructor Sarah Crotzer, said. “One on earth as Peter the fighter pilot fights what appeared to be some sort of seizure that comes over him and seeks help from a local doctor, and in heaven the angel is working to claim his soul. He ultimately has to go up in front of a celestial court to argue that he should stay alive in the arms of the woman he loves.”
The International Film Series just begun its four movie film series, with the first one this month.
“Together, my friend Professor Kevin Yeargin and I have been looking for new opportunities to bring sort of an expanded movie culture here to Vol State because we believe it is a way students can experience cultures and ideas they wouldn’t normally get to see here in Tennessee,” Crotzer said.
“Professor Yeargin and I will be co-teaching an honors section in Introduction to Film and we gave our Honor Intro to Film a theme of world cinema looking at both American movies and movies from around the world and how they respond to each other throughout the 20th century to the present day,” explained Crotzer. “We thought that this was a unique opportunity to bring different kinds of movies to our students in class and we thought, ‘How could we do that for the campus at large?’”
Last semester, Crotzer said she and Yeargin worked with the Office of Student Engagement and Support to have a brief Halloween film, and it went so well that the Office of Student Engagement and Support sponsored a four-movie International Film Series this semester.
The International Film Series, “Stairway to Heaven,” is free to the public.
