The Volunteer State Community College Lady Volunteers rode sophomore Aliyah Miller’s triple-double to a 61-51 win over the Roane State Community College Lady Raiders Jan. 12, at Pickel Field House.

Miller led all scorers with 20 points.  She made eight of her 12 field goal attempts and all four of her free throws.   Miller also had 10 rebounds and 10 assists on the afternoon.

After losing three players to academic ineligibility, Erica Mason, LaMonica Mintlow and Titania Lavender, the Pioneers needed every point they could get.  The bench contribution just 7 points and 6 rebounds for the entire game.

The Pioneers had built a 24-10 lead at the end of the first quarter only to give back all but 5 points of that by half time when the score was 32-27.  The third quarter ended with the score 51-36 but Roane State outscored the Pioneers 15-10 in the final quarter leaving VSCC with its final 10-point margin of victory.

“We have got to learn to finish,” said Volunteer head coach Otis Key.  “We have to do a much better job of putting teams away. We gave them a fighting chance in the fourth and they closed it to 9.”

In addition to Miller’s triple double, Key singled out the play of freshman Xavia Williams who contributed 15 points (five of nine from the field, including two of two 3-point shots, three of four from the free throw line and nine rebounds).

Additionally, Shalaya Armstead hit four of nine field goal attempts and two of three free throws to finish the game with 10 points.  She also pulled down nine rebounds.

McKenzie Wallace added nine points making three of her five shots from the field and her only free throw attempt.  Off of the bench, Amanda Bennett scored five points, and TaViaya Hamilton added two more.

The win left the Pioneers with a 6-7 record overall (2-4 in conference play) headed into a two-week road trip that saw them play last Friday night at Southwest Tennessee Community College and Saturday at Dyersburg State Community College.

VSCC’s next home game will be played Saturday when they host Motlow State Community College at 2 p.m., in Pickel Fieldhouse.
