On Nov. 12 the Volunteer State Community College Lady Pioneers basketball team hosts Northeast Mississippi Community College for the first home game of the season.
“We haven’t really talked about that game because we are trying to emphasize one game at a time. After the game on Monday, we will look back at we can take away from that game,” said guard Hope Hinson last Friday.
Two games into the 2018-19 season the Pioneers have an even record 1-1. This time last year the record was a five-game losing streak.
Before last Friday the Pioneers did not hold practice according to guard Aliyah Miller because most of the team was feeling under the weather.
“Once I get comfortable with a set rotation and everyone gets comfortable with it I think that’s where we turn the corner and get better,” said head coach Otis Key.
Key did not have a game scheduled this past week and in result was able to get work done with his team after winning one of the first games by three points.
“This is the only time until Christmas where we’ll get time like this. We can fix some things and address some things that I feel like we need to pick it up on,” said Key.
Highlighting the game last year in Northeast Mississipi Miller dropped 13 points and the Pioneers lost 84-44.
“I think we’re more prepared honestly. We’ve practiced about seven times in the last four days and thrown in all kinds of new defenses and presses that should prepare us,” said guard Morgan Sims.
As of Nov. 9, the Pioneers sit in seventh place in the conference according to the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association standings web page.
“It will give us more motivation to be at home. This is where we are each and every day so we are more comfortable here,” said Sims.
With a three-game homestand lasting Nov. 12-19, the first conference opponent Jackson State Community College comes in town Nov. 17, for the first matchup of two this season.
