Tim Goodrich scored 37 points to lead the Volunteer State Community College Volunteers to a 91-86 win over the Roane State Community College Rebels Jan. 12, at Pickel Fieldhouse.

Goodrich’s heroics offset the loss of four Volunteer players, including the nation’s leading junior college scorer, George Stanberry, who were unable to play because they were academically ineligible.

“George was a big factor to our team,” said Goodrich.  “I was only trying to do what he would have wanted us to do and help the team.”

Roane State Head Coach Randy Nesbit credited Goodrich’s fall-away jumper from the right corner with 3:29 left in the game with sealing the win for the Pioneers.  “That step-away jumper with about three minutes left killed us,” he said. “We were tired from our game last night and just didn’t have enough left at the end.”

The win left the Pioneers with a 4-10 overall record and a 2-5 conference mark heading into a two-game road trip.  They played at Southwest Tennessee Community College last Friday night and at Dyersburg State last Saturday.

VCC will host Motlow State College at 4 p.m., Saturday in Pickel Fieldhouse.

In addition to his 37 points, Goodrich was 15 of 21 from the field, making four of his five 3-point attempts and three of his four free throws, the freshman guard had seven assists, three steals and one rebound.

“I’m just totally ecstatic with this victory,” said VCC head coach Rusty Melvin.  “Timmy, my point guard just took the game over, he said. Tonight, we came out, played hard and played as a team.  They are seven people playing out there as a team.”

In addition to Goodrich, two other Volunteers scored in double figures.  Freshman Guard Jonathan Howard came off of the bench to score 13 points. He shot five for seven from the field, including making one of his two three-point attempts, and both of his free throws.  Howard’s 11 rebounds led VCC in that category.

Sophomore center Jabori Murphy scored 10 points making four of his nine field goal attempts and both of his free throws.  He also pulled down eight rebounds.

Jordan Buchanan chipped in with nine points off of the bench.  The sophomore guard also had two rebounds and one blocked shot.  Justin Goodson and Chase Hawkins scored six points each with Goodson adding seven rebounds, an assist, a steal and a blocked shot.

Hawkins pulled down four rebounds, had two steals and a blocked shot.  Jaden Chumley and George Roberson tallied 4 points each and Heston King scored 2 points.

“We’re the best we’ve been in the conference in a long time right now,” said Melvin.  “It was a great win for our team.”
