Donna Dunaway has been hired as the new director of financial aid at Volunteer State Community College.

She was assistant director of Financial Aid at Motlow State Community College in Smyrna, Tennessee, for nearly nine years, according to Vol State’s website.

“My hopes in leading the financial aid office is to continue the amazing legacy I am inheriting from Mrs. Sue [Pedigo] and to find ways to make operations more efficient where we can,” said Dunaway, who has previously 24 years of experience in financial aid. “I just want to bring in a new perspective and be a part of this amazing team as we move forward in Vol State’s future.”

Spring break at Volunteer State Community College March 4-8, and there are no classes, according to Vol State’s website.

Vol State student Bailey Morgan Evans said her purpose of spring break is to enjoy time with family, friends, and reset for the other half of school. She also said that her best destination is her house.

Evans also said that most people go to the beach during spring break and that she did not know of any events that were going on during spring break.

The Student Veterans of America at Volunteer State Community College will be accepting donations for care packages to be sent overseas to deployed units, now until Friday, March 15, at 5 p.m. There will be boxes located around the campus that donations can be put into. This is a fundraiser and special event, according to Vol State’s website.

“The Veterans Care Package drive is an event to help gain items to send to a deployed unit to help them with items they cannot easily access while deployed,” Tiffany Zwart, Coordinator of Student Support, said in an email.

“Some of these items are necessities, like hygiene items. Others are items of comfort and reminders of home, like cookies, protein bars, hot sauces for meals, and candy or gum. The individuals in the unit benefit from this.”

Volunteer State Community College will be hosting the film “Thank You for Your Service” Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Wood Campus Center in the Mary Cole Nichols Dining Room B. This film is about a soldier who tries to readjust to civilian life after returning home from the war in Iraq, according to Vol State’s website.

According to IMBb, a group of U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq struggle to integrate back into family and civilian life, while living with the memory of a war that threatens to destroy them long after they’ve left the battlefield.

Vol State students weighed in on the importance of students seeing this film.
