On September 29, Vol State, with the help of the Department Chair of Social Science and Education Stella Pierce, hosted their very first quiz bowl about the U.S Constitution. Located in the Wood building, home to the school’s bookstore and cafeteria, students faced off against one another in separate rounds to win prizes. Many classes were in attendance, accumulating a decently sized audience for the school’s first quiz bowl.
In each round there were two teams, each made up of three to four students, and they were asked twenty questions, testing their knowledge of the United States Constitution. For each question a student got correct, both the team and the individual person earned points. The team winner and the individual winner of each round got a prize, including Vol State merchandise. In the very last round, the “championship round”, the individual students with the highest number of points competed against each other for the biggest prize: a gift bag including a $50 Amazon gift card.
The first ten questions of each round were worth ten points, and the last ten questions were worth twenty. There was a good mix of easy questions and hard questions, giving the students a chance to earn points but making it difficult enough so there would be a challenge.
“If this goes well, I hope there will be other quiz bowls in the future,” Stella Pierce says in an interview.
Look out for announcements for future quiz bowls, and if one piques your interest, don’t hesitate to sign up!
