Vol State’s Vice President of Academic Affairs Candidate for Position of President at West Tennessee School

Dr. George Pimentel, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Volunteer State Community College, has been selected as one of the final four candidates for the president of Jackson State Community College.

The Tennessee Board of Regents named Pimentel as one of its candidates for Jackson State Community College on Feb. 28.

The college, located in Jackson, Tennessee, began its search for a new permanent president back in November 2019 after its fifth president, Allana Hamilton, was  appointed Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for the College System of Tennessee.

The other three candidates are

  • Dr. Rolando Garcia, President and Vice Provost of Academic Resources of Broward College’s Judson A. Samuels South Campus
  • Dr. Jeff Jochems, President and Vice Chancellor of Ozarks Technical Community College’s Richwood Valley Campus
  •  Dr. Paige M. Niehaus, provost for strategic initiatives and executive director for the Design Center at the Wayne County Community College District

According to the Jackson State CC website, the candidates will participate in campus visits starting March 16 – 19.

Pimentel’s campus visit is set for the first date, March 16. During these visits the candidates will meet with staff, faculty, students and the public in public forums from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. After the campus visits, feedback from the forums and meetings will be gathered by the Tennessee Board of Regents Chancellor Flora W. Tydings. Then one candidate will be selected for nomination to the Board of Regents, which will appoint the next president during a later meeting.

According to a schedule on the Jackson State CC website, the next president is set to be appointed on March 26, 2020 and set to be in place beginning July 1, 2020.

In a profile by Jackson State CC on the presidential search, it explores the position of president, states the criteria for the position and gives information about the school itself.

According to the profile, Jackson State CC is a two-year public postsecondary institution with four locations in West Tennessee. Over 4,900 credit students and over 500 non-credit students are enrolled in the school, and it employs 250 full-time employees including 98 full-time faculty members.

The criteria for the position of president is split into “Preferred Criteria” and “Expected Criteria.” Some of this criteria is as stated on the profile:

  • “An earned doctorate from an accredited institution (preferred).
  • A distinguished record of teaching and experience in public higher education (preferred)
  •  A minimum of five years successful campus administrative experience at a level with significant decision-making responsibilities affecting an entire campus or as head of a major academic or administrative unit in an academic environment (preferred)
  • A distinguished record of extensive senior level administrative experience in a complex business, industry, or government enterprise(preferred)
  • An understanding of the needs and concerns of the public and private constituencies of the College, as well as of the College community, including students, faculty and staff, alumni, and other College supporters”

Pimentel was promoted to Vice President of Academic Affairs at Vol State back in 2014. According to his CV, before being promoted to his current position, at Vol State he was a Professor of History, interim Dean of the Social Sciences Division and Director of the Honors Program. Before coming to Vol State Pimentel worked at Middle Tennessee State University, from which he is an alumnus, as Assistant to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Coordinator of Continuing Education. As Vice President of Academic Affairs, Pimentel coordinates accreditation efforts for the school, supervises curriculum development, and provides leadership for all academic programs.
