The Volunteer State radio, WVCP, will be holding an open house to celebrate its 40th anniversary on 88.5 FM on March 16, in the Ramer building from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Former students, disk jockeys and community members are welcome to attend the open house and partake in lunch that will be served at noon.
According to the Vol State website, WVCP took to the airwaves on January 4, 1979.
Station manager, Howard Espravnik, arrived at Vol State in 1986 and continues to work with students at the station today, over three decades later.
Espravnik said he is looking forward to seeing people that he has not seen in a long time and speaking with them about where life has taken them in the communications industry.
A slide show of old photos of the station will be presented to illustrate how technology has changed over the past 40 years.
New software, servers and improvements that have been made will be presented during tours of the station.
The open house will serve as a fun reunion for past volunteers as well as an opportunity to be educated.
The Vol State radio station gives students pursuing careers in broadcasting professional experience. Students have the opportunity to learn all the tricks and techniques that are required in future professions.
“I’ve always had an inclining for entertaining and being a part of broadcast,” said current DJ and Vol State student Logan Kemp.
People who would like to attend the open house are asked to register online at www.eventbrite.com. In the “looking for” search bar, type “WVCP” and the event will appear. Those who register online will be able to attend the open house free of charge.
