Welcome Back From the SGA President

Last updated on January 28, 2018

On behalf of the Student Government Association (SGA) of Volunteer State Community College, I would like to WELCOME new and returning students to the 2016-2017 Pioneer year. I am Sandra “Domino” Hunt and will be humbly and proudly serving the student body as SGA President. However, I am not alone in the duties of making this a great year for the students of Vol State. The Vice-President – Natalie White, Secretary of State – Caitlyn Ellis, Secretary of Treasury – Dillon van Rennes, Attorney General – Joshua Taylor, Campus Activities Board (CAB) Chair – Brittany Davis, Senior Senator – Brent West, and Senator at Large – Sara Keen, make up our SGA team.
In case there are those who do not know what the SGA does or what it represents, here’s a little insight. The SGA is a proxy between the student body and administration. We assist campus clubs in funding and organization. We work as a team to make a difference on the main campus as well as our other campuses at Cookeville, Highland Crest, and Livingston. We bring events, speakers, movie nights, service projects, intramurals, and other fun things around campus to get students involved and give the brain some rest time. We are here to address concerns, questions, and ideas of students.
An item that has been in the forefront for quite a while is a walkway or crossing if you will, from Vol State’s main campus to stores and other restaurants across from campus. Dr. Faulkner, President of Vol State, has done research and leg-work on this issue. We will work closely with him for the best answer. Our main concern is for the safety of all our students. Additionally, we would like to see student get involved in our campus clubs. We currently have fifteen active clubs and welcome new ones to work under the direction of the Student Life and Diversity Initiatives office. Another item is to get students into school spirit and pride by supporting our sports teams. We have men’s and women’s basketball teams, men’s baseball, and women’s softball teams. This list for student involvement will be added to as the year progresses.
We have SGA meetings twice a month. Anyone (student and/or faculty) may attend these meetings. They will be held in the Rochelle Center across from the Learning Commons in the Thigpen Library Building. The first meeting is April 29th from 12:45 pm to 1:45 pm. Our SGA Cabinet this year is open to conversation within the student body. We look forward to serving as a team. We are going to be leading by example, not directives. We are approachable and want ideas from students that will improve our Vol State campuses. All ideas from all campuses are encouraged because that is who we serve. I appreciate this opportunity to serve the student body and improve Vol State Community College. If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to email me at Shunt@volstate.edu. The SGA Cabinet is looking forward to CELEBRATE by making this an AWESOME year!!
