When in doubt, ask your resources

College and university students have been sent questionable emails from supposed honor societies.

Some of these questionable emails can look very pleasing, giving students the promise of scholarships and much, much more. All that is asked of them is to pay a fee that can be as high as $150.

If things look suspicious, the best course of action to take is to go to the Office of Student Engagement and Support. The employees of this office help when it comes to any question.

“There are legitimate offers and questionable ones. If the student has any inquires call, email, or stop by,” said Administrative Assistant Angel Dunning.

These emails are rare. Do not get nervous. Always ask if you are unsure so you can get the correct help you need.

“Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) will send out email invites then a certificate in the mail,” Instructor of Sociology, Social Science, and Education Division Jamie Fuston explained.

Mailed invitations can also be a form of letting you know you have qualified with societies.

The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) can be one of the mailed invites, which is a legitimate organization.

All the societies available at Volunteer State Community College have benefits that can really help a student.

There are many activities to help students participate in the VSCC communities.

“Taking a leadership role in launching HonorSociety.org is a chance to build concrete experience, grow your network, and leave your footprint on your campus,” according to HonorSociety.org.

Some programs are inactive now, but if any student is interested in an activity and wants to reactivate one, then come to the Office of Student Engagement and Support and they will help.

All that is needed of the student is to find a full-time faculty member to be the club advisor and recruit at least 10 other currently enrolled students to get the organization started, given a few more steps needed.

After the completion of the required tasks, the club will then go through the approval process.
