Vol State Hosts Latinx Experience

Volunteer State Community College’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion hosted an interview preparation and the Latinx Experience through Storytelling event Thursday Jan. 31, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Mary Cole Nichols Dining Room B.

Office of Diversity and Inclusion administrative assistant Lori Miller said 41 people signed into the event, but there were others who attended but did not sign in.
This event was open to the public and offered food.

Vol State has a new Humanities Dean

The Division of Humanities at Volunteer State Community College has a new dean this semester, Dr. Tonya Daniels.

In October 2018, former Dean Jennifer Brezina stepped down to assume the role of Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs.

During the transition period, faculty and staff put forth a helping hand to efficiently maintain the position.

Unity Week commemorates Black History Month

At 11:30 a.m., Monday Feb. 4, local artist, Omari Booker will be displaying his art exhibit “The Red Line” in the Mary Cole Nichols Dining Room B.

This event will mark the start of Unity Week, which is a celebration of Black History Month.

Booker uses his art to talk about racial inequality and divide in this country.

Recycling Program Suspended

Recycling on the Volunteer State Community College campus has been suspended due to China’s refusal to recycle the West’s plastics and papers.

Approximately 45 percent of the world’s recycled plastics have been exported to China.

As of Jan. 2018, however, China has been rejecting most imports of mixed plastics under a policy called “National Sword.”

Join a Math Competition

What is your New Year’s resolution for 2019? Why not put your brain to the test and join a math competition this year? Joining a math competition is a great way to get yourself in gear for the new semester.

No matter what math courses you have or have not taken, there is at least one competition for math you can join.

Volunteer State Community College offers two types of math competitions every year: TMATYC and AMATYC.
