April is known as Earth Month, which is the time to celebrate and discuss taking care of Planet Earth. Earth Day is annually celebrated on April 22.
To celebrate Earth Month, Vol State will be hosting a Sustainability and Environmental Awareness event on Wednesday, April 3, in the Wood Campus Center from 12:45 p.m. through 2:00 p.m. during campus hours.
The event will have presentations from different divisions discussing topics and research related to sustainability and the environment.
“They have had presentations on big events in the field out here on the quad. There have been just a few speakers coming in to talk about the importance of recycling and the environmental conditions and climate changes,” said Professor Phillip Williams, Sociology Faculty/Department Chair.
“We have four different academic fields talking about the topic of sustainability and they come from classes like an Economics position, Geography position, Sociology position, and a biological position,” said Professor Williams.
“We typically celebrate Earth Day on the main campus along with Spring Fling, to the best of my recollection. Student Services sets up games like cornhole and ping pong and serves food like burgers and dogs. Often there are activities like jump houses and crafts for students,” said Professor Keith Bell, Associate Professor of Geography Social Science, and Education.
“Student Services often issues VSCC-branded swag to students, like environmentally friendly bracelets or t-shirts that had, ‘This shirt was made from recycled plastic bottles.’ Student organizations set up tables to get their messages out and recruit new members. There are some demonstrations from students majoring in earth or physical science. Finally, the day is replete with messages too, ‘Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle,” said Professor Bell.
