Guest speaker Gregory Fontus hosted the Deconstructing Unconscious Bias event from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Rochelle Center of the Thigpen Library Nov. 7.

Gregory Fontus, M. Ed. and M. Div., is the Assistant Director of Inclusion Initiatives and Cultural Competence at Vanderbilt University.

He was asked to speak at Volunteer State Community College by Lori Miller, administrative assistant, and Jeff King, manager of diversity and inclusion.

“Social justice speaking has always been a passion of mine. I’ve always felt called to do this work. It started since I was in graduate school, as a matter of fact, I took a class about diversity and inclusion and felt really comfortable about it, loved doing it, and I said, ‘This is what I want to do,” said Fontus.

“The goal of this event was to educate faculty, staff, and students on the unconscious bias that we all hold,” said Miller.

Miller said about 45 people RSVP’d to this event and that about 20 attended.

During his presentation, Fontus talked about how social identity affects how people view themselves and others.
