When does an opinion become a judgment?

Unity week at Vol State featured an art exhibit about racial inequality, a documentary about civil rights, food from other cultures, an interfaith dialogue, and a training session to better understand different lifestyles. Last semester the school invited special guests like Wulin Hunyan and the Paul Brock Band for a multi-cultural experience. “Diversity” is a prevalent word in colleges today. It means to understand and respect the uniqueness of each individual and our differences, whether they be race, ethnicity, gender, religion, political beliefs, sexual orientation, or others.

Basketball squads trying to avoid having to play into conference tourneys

Both the Volunteer State Community College Men’s and Women’s basketball squads are in jeopardy of having to win play-in games to make the Division VII conference tournament which begins March 1, at Cleveland State Community College.

As of now, the Lady Pioneers control their own destiny. With five games left in conference play, they sport a 4-7 record, pending the outcome of road games this weekend at Walters State and Roane State Community Colleges last Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Pioneers lost to Walters State, 78-50, Jan. 11, and beat Roan State 61-51, Jan. 12. Both of those games were on the Pioneers home court. The Lady Pioneers then will return home for a 5:30 p.m. game with Southwest Tennessee Community College. whom they lost to 67-50, January 18.

Vol State hosts veterans forum

Volunteer State Community College Student Veteran Association (VSVA) will be hosting a Veterans Forum Tuesday, Feb. 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mary Cole Nichols Dining Room A, according to Vol State’s Facebook page.

“The Veterans Forum is an event to give outsiders a look at what military life and transition is like,” said Vol State Veterans Club President, Allison Summers, who served three years in the United States Marine Corps before being medically discharged.

Author Frank E. Dobson to speak at Vol State

The Volunteer State Community College Rendered Invisible event, where Vanderbilt University Dr. Frank E. Dobson, Jr., will talk about his book, “Rendered Invisible: Stories of Blacks and Whites, Love and Death,” is on Feb. 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., in the Wood Campus Center.

This event is hosted by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion for Black History Month.

Vol State Office of Diversity and Inclusion administrative assistant Lori Miller says Dobson spoke at Vol State before, but this event will mainly focus on discussing his book.

Cub Scouts collect glasses for mission trip

Every year, several Vol State ophthalmic students are chosen to partake in a mission trip to Guatemala, where they have the opportunity to serve people in need with their knowledge and talents.

In an email from Vol State Ophthalmic Technician Program Director Alisha Cornish, the Cub Scouts Webelos 2 Den from Pack 407 collected between 200 and 300 pairs of glasses for the Volunteer State Community College ophthalmic technician department’s upcoming mission trip to Guatemala. The Webelos Scouts have been working on a project to help the ophthalmic department prepare for the trip.
