Cafeteria Prices Raise Conversations Among Staff and Students

By Abigail Vaughn

For the first time since 2020, Vol State Community College has opened a food source for students other than vending machines. The Vol State Cafeteria has been open for a week now and many students and staff are expressing their opinions about the cost of food.

C and G Fine Foods is providing meat and two sides for $13, meat and three sides for $15, hamburger and fries for $11, tenders and fries for $12, chicken wings for $13, and slices of pizza for $4. They are also serving breakfast in addition to these lunch options.

Some students and staff think these prices are too expensive to accommodate college students.

“I can’t justify buying a burger for $11 when I could go to McDonald’s and get a Big Mac, medium fry, and medium drink for $6 through the app,” said Sarah Thomas, a student at Vol State.

Will Fisher, a library assistant at Vol State, hasn’t bought anything from the cafeteria yet, “I’ve gone to the cafeteria, but I haven’t bought anything because of the prices.”

Although some find the prices are high for college students, the quality of the food has been a topic of conversation as well.

“I got a big piece of BBQ chicken (leg/thigh) and some broccoli and cheese. It was delicious. The meat was very tender and falling off the bone. It cost me $12 and change. If I had just gotten the piece of chicken, it would have been $8 and some change. I don’t know if students could afford to eat there every day; it depends on how they budget their money,” said Lynda Vincent, the Coordinator of Library Services at Vol State.

“I think it would be a good idea to have a ‘special’ of the day in which the price of the item(s) would be cheaper than normal. Or maybe they could have a couple of ‘value menu’ items available every day,” Vincent continued.

C and G Fine Foods are offering specials of the day, which you can find here, but the prices remain the same.
