The Struggle is Real for the Baseball Team

“We just need to start hitting better, timely hitting, and playing better defense. Our pitching is there, but we have not been hitting as well as we’d like to, and our defense is struggling,” said third baseman, Maddox Vondohlen, when asked about the Pioneers struggles this season after losing three games against Dyersburg State Community College (8-3, 2-0, and 8-2) and 1-1 against Cumberland University JV (5-4W and 3-2L)

With a record under .500 and not being able to hit consistently, the Pioneers said they are working hard in hopes of winning.

“We just need to be more consistent,” Vondohlen added.

The Lady Pioneers host a four-game series against Saluqis

Tied for second place in the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association, the Volunteer State Community College Lady Pioneers softball team will host a four-game series with the Southwest Tennessee Community College Saluqis Friday and Saturday.

The Pioneers played a four-game series at Walters State Community College while the Saluqis hosted a four-game series with Columbia State College last weekend.

“They’re better than they usually are,” said Pioneer Coach Johnny Lynn of the Saluqis. “They look to be a fairly good team because they’ve got some players.”

New Class Schedules are Released for Summer and Fall Terms

Priority registration for the 2019 summer and fall semesters at Volunteer State Community College will open Monday, April 1, for veterans and sophomores.

The summer and fall schedules are already available online at https://ssb.volstate.edu/PROD/bwckschd.p_disp_dyn_sched.

“Students with 30 or more completed hours can begin registering at 8 a.m. Monday, April 1,” said Tim Amyx, Vol State Director of Admissions and Registrar. “All veterans (regardless of the number of completed hours) can begin registration at 6 a.m., that day.”

Students Needed for Patch the Mascot

Volunteer State Community College would like students to apply to become the next mascot for the upcoming 2019-2020 academic year.

“We are looking for at least four students who will be enrolled in Vol State classes this coming fall, are academically progressing well in their classes, can fit comfortably into the costume, can walk in costume, and be reliable to show up to events to portray Patch,” said Tabitha Sherrell, the Vol State coordinator of Student Activities for seven years. Sherrell also co-advises the Student Government Association (SGA) and advises the National Society of Leadership and Success.

Eric Melcher, who has been working as the coordinator of Public Relations and Marketing at Vol State for 13 years with prior work in television news for 18 years, explained how Patch the mascot was discovered ,

Egging video goes viral on social media

In an example of how social media has largely replaced conventional news in our time, a video of an Australian teen egging Australian senator Fraser Anning went viral this past week. The teen was allegedly outraged by the senator’s reaction to the Christchurch, New Zealand mass shooting.

Anning had released a statement Friday calling Islam “the religious equivalent of fascism,” and blaming immigration policies for the attack.

The video shows the teen approaching Anning while he is speaking to reporters and hitting him on the back of the head with an egg while filming the whole thing with his phone. The senator responded by hurling around and punching the young man in the face. In the video, his aids surrounded the boy and not-so-gently subdued him.
