The Student Government Association (SGA) at Volunteer State Community College will be sponsoring Christmas for the Kids to benefit children of currently enrolled students who are experiencing financial hardship.

“The SGA works with all student organizations to maintain and improve the quality of student life both on and off-campus,” according to the Vol State SGA website.

“SGA started Christmas for the Kids to give parents the opportunity to put gifts under the tree for Christmas and/or bring their kids to a Christmas party and meet Santa.

“Historically, the gifts have always remained anonymous and the way they have been given out has changed throughout the years. For example, Santa used to visit the Christmas for the Kids party and give out the gifts, and then SGA modified the program and started offering the opportunity for parents to pick-up gifts without their children so that they could hide the gifts until Christmas.

“Of course, this year will be different because the party will be drive-thru. Applicants will be given the option to pick-up their gifts during the day to hide them, or drive-thru the party and receive the gift,” said Tabitha Sherrell, coordinator of student activities.

Between all four campuses, there are more than 200 children in need of gifts, according to an SGA email sent out to Vol State students.

The age range is 0-17 and we have children in every age group. This year we have 204 children to be sponsored at the Gallatin campus, which is an increase from last year, where we had 126 children. These numbers do not include the other campuses which saw an increase in need.

The high demand items are winter coats, winter boots, scarves, gloves, hats and clothes,” said Sherrell.

“For students interested in sponsoring an ornament please email student.engagement@volstate.edu. Please include which campus, if you would like to sponsor a boy or girl, and the age range. Sponsors are suggested to purchase the child’s needs and a want, spending approximately $50.

Sponsors are welcome to purchase their gifts on amazon and have the items directly shipped to Vol State. Volunteer State Community College Attn: Student Engagement & Support (Wood, 215) 1480 Nashville Pike Gallatin, Tennessee 37066,” according to the SGA email.
