KEY lectures keep minds engaged

Volunteer State Community College will host a series of KEY lectures to promote lifelong learning.
KEY stands for “Keep Educating Yourself.”

The objective of these lectures is to keep participants minds engaged while informing them of various topics ranging from honey bees to caring for the elderly.

The discussion topics will be discussed in the following order: “Elder Care Law Issues,” “Wizard of Oz,” “The Reformation – 1517,” “Honey Bees 101,” “Tennessee Self-Defense Law and Firearm Simulator,” and “The Korean War and the Relevance to Current Political Issues.”

Vol State holds college transfer fair

Volunteer State’s College Transfer Fair will be occurring on Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., in MCN dining room B located in the Wood Campus Center.

Representatives from colleges including Austin Peay, Union University, Belmont, and several other four-year colleges will be attending the transfer fair to answer any questions that Vol State students may have. The representatives will be able to answer questions regarding tuition, financial aid, extra-curricular activities, internships opportunities, the admission process, career paths and much more! They can give students advice and information on degree programs and majors that are offered at that respecting college.

Cub Scouts collect glasses for mission trip

Every year, several Vol State ophthalmic students are chosen to partake in a mission trip to Guatemala, where they have the opportunity to serve people in need with their knowledge and talents.

In an email from Vol State Ophthalmic Technician Program Director Alisha Cornish, the Cub Scouts Webelos 2 Den from Pack 407 collected between 200 and 300 pairs of glasses for the Volunteer State Community College ophthalmic technician department’s upcoming mission trip to Guatemala. The Webelos Scouts have been working on a project to help the ophthalmic department prepare for the trip.

Recycling Program Suspended

Recycling on the Volunteer State Community College campus has been suspended due to China’s refusal to recycle the West’s plastics and papers.

Approximately 45 percent of the world’s recycled plastics have been exported to China.

As of Jan. 2018, however, China has been rejecting most imports of mixed plastics under a policy called “National Sword.”
