TheSettler.Online Fall Book Recommendations (Opinion)

By: Madelyne VanHermert

Fall is the perfect season to get cozy inside with a good book. Oct. is coming up, and with that is Halloween! Thriller and mystery books are the perfect way to get into a spooky season mindset.

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides is a slow-burn thriller that will keep you in total suspense.

The book holds the reader in an uncomfortable confusion for the duration of the book; with a mind-blowing plot twist at the end.

The main character Theo Faber is a psychotherapist who works at a psychiatric unit. He meets a silent patient, Alicia Berenson. Alice is in the psychiatric unit for killing her husband, falling silent, and never speaking a word since.

The first sentence of The Silent Patient:

“Alicia Berenson was thirty-three years old when she killed her husband.”

Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell

Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell is a fast-paced suspense novel that will hook readers early on. The conclusion can only be described as disturbing and upsetting.

The main character Laurel Mack is the mother of Ellie Mack; a 15-year-old girl who suddenly disappeared. 10 years after her disappearance, Laurel Mack is still trying to get her life together when she meets a charming man named Floyd Dunn and his two daughters. The only problem is his youngest daughter, 9-year-old Poppy Dunn is the spitting image of Ellie Mack.

The first sentence of Then She Was Gone:

“Those months, the months before she disappeared, were the best months.”

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is a mystery trilogy filled with riddles and plot twists that have readers wondering what is going to happen next.

The main character Avery Grambs, is a 17-year-old girl who is mostly homeless and living off and on with her older sister. Until one day she is told she was left in the will of a billionaire who recently died.

Come to find out she inherited almost the man’s entire fortune, including his estates. The one stipulation: she has to live in his main estate with the family for one year, which includes his four grandsons.

Avery has to discover why she was put into the will, while simultaneously living with a family that resents her for taking what they thought would be theirs.

The first sentence of The Inheritance Games:

“When I was a kid, my mom constantly invented games.”

a good girl’s guide to murder by Holly Jackson

a good girl’s guide to murder by Holly Jackson is a mystery trilogy. The trilogy is shocking and unpredictable with several plot twists.

I physically could not put the third book down.

The main character’s development across the three books is one of the most interesting I have ever read.

The main character Pippa Fitz-Amobi decides to reexamine a closed murder case for her senior year final project. It starts out as a simple report on how the media affected the case but snowballs into possibly proving the murderer’s innocence.

With the help of the convicted murderer’s brother, Ravi Singh, Pip uncovers dark secrets she never would have thought possible.

The first sentence of a good girl’s guide to murder:

“Pip knew where they lived.”
