Vol States Search for a New President

By Madelyne VanHemert

Volunteer State Community College is currently looking for presidential applicants to succeed the college’s previous president, Dr.Orinthia T. Montague.

Vol State currently has an interim president appointed by the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR), Dr. Russ Deaton. The position is temporary, while TBR searches for a permanent candidate.

The application for the Vol State President position is open until March 25, 2024. The permanent president is expected to officially be in office by July 1, 2024.

Interviews are not yet being conducted, however, there is a clear idea of what type of person TBR is looking for to fill the position.

“Someone who has a vision, is a good communicator, appreciates the complexity of a college, very much committed to the mission of an open access college like we are.” said Dr. Russ Deaton, Interim President at Vol State.

The process of choosing a candidate that fits the Vol State agenda is inclusive in hearing what everyone has to say regarding what type of person is wanted at Vol State.

“It’s very collaborative. The committee has students, faculty, community members, staff, and members of the board of regents, there are probably 15-20 people and they get a lot of input from a lot of people. There are open forms. They’ll have the candidates come by and run through a battery of interviews with lots of people. It’s a very thorough process to say the least.” said Dr. Deaton.

The search for a president that fits Vol State is underway and will have more definitive sights set on a person sometime after March.

“It will attract a lot of people because it is a great college, a great place to be, wonderful people.” said Dr. Deaton.
