Faculty Spotlight is on Jamie Johnson-Gorczyca

Jamie Johnson-Gorczyca is the Settler’s Volunteer State Community College faculty spotlight.

Johnson-Gorczyca, who has been an instructor of English at Vol State for six years, said that she, “grew up all over the place, but spent most of my time in North Carolina before moving to Nashville about three and a half years ago. Growing up, my parents really emphasized the importance ofbooks, and I spent a lot of time reading and writing.”

Johnson-Gorczyca explained, “I was the kid who loved school—so much that I never left. Outside of work, I enjoy cooking, traveling, reading, thinking about going to the gym, spending time with my husband and cats, and traveling.”

RSO hosts the first Thursday Trivia

The Volunteer State Community College Returning Student Organization (RSO) hosted Thursday Trivia in the Mary Cole Nichols Dining Room A March 28, from noon – 1 p.m.

Twelve students participated, divided into two teams and competed against each other in the categories of pop culture, boy bands, animals, Disney movies, sports, and TV shows.

The two team captains were Jason Blaire and Ethan Denson, and the MC was Tracy Lilly.

Letter from Patch

A letter from Patch, the Volunteer State Community College mascot who has not been seen on campus in months, was received by the Settler office last Wednesday.

Postmarked Juneau, Ak., the letter details a litany of issues that Patch says led to a self-imposed exile from the campus.

“Really,” the letter says, “I am dissatisfied with the level of spirit demonstrated by the students at Vol State.”

Pioneers win three out of last five

The Volunteer State Community College Pioneers lost three game series, 1-2, against the second team in conference, Walters State Community College, and sweeps Cumberland University JV, 2-0.

The Pioneers traveled to Morristown, Tennessee to face Walters State Community College March 22 and 23.

“Game one was really close, tied 0-0 going into the fourth. In the fifth, they got a hit, the next guy gets a walk, and the next guy hits a grand slam,” said head coach Ryan Hunt.

Lady Vols to travel to Jackson State

After dropping two spots to fourth place in the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association softball standings, the Volunteer State Community College Lady Pioneers will travel to Jackson State Community College for a four-game series this weekend.

The Pioneers dropped three of four games at Walters State Community College March 22 and 23, by scores of 10-9 and 10-1 on Saturday before losing the first game 3-1 and taking the second 6-4 on Sunday.

“It comes down to whether or not we get the hits when we need them,” said Johnny Lynn, Vol State head coach.
