Most Vol State students weren’t around in 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed, and people said that socialism was dead. But just 28 years later, socialism has become a popular concept again, with a reported 57% Americans having a favorable impression of socialism and only 47% favoring capitalism. But according to a New York Post editorial, “Democratic socialists don’t seem to embrace the classic definition of socialism, that being government control of the means of production – which has traditionally meant nationalizing whole industries.”

The Volunteer State Community College Speech and Debate team won the Novice National Parliamentary Debate Tournament, and its members placed in the top three for other individual events, that took place from March 8-10 at Bowling Green State University.

The Debate team was comprised of Elijah Avery, sophomore, and Danielle Salvato, freshman.

In Individual Events, Avery “won second place in Debate, second place in Impromptu Sales, third place in Impromptu Speaking, and third place in Pentathlon,” according to a press release from Dr. Karen Johnson, Director of Forensics and advisor of the Speech and Debate team.

Volunteer State Community College will be invaded by fantastic beasts at 6 p.m., Friday, when the Campus Activities Board (CAB) presents Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in the Wood Campus Center’s Mary Cole Nichols Dining Room B.

Admission to the event is free, and according to a flyer, the CAB will provide free food and drink until it runs out. The CAB is also encouraging attendees to wear Hogwarts house colors to the event.

Fantastic Beasts is a sequel to 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them which is both a prequel and sequel to author J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series of novels and movies.

On Friday, March 29, 9:15 a.m. to noon, Volunteer State Community College hosted Honey Bees 101 as part of the KEY Lecture Learning Series, which author Jane Miller presented in room 101 of Caudill Hall.

She discussed the important role that bees play in our society.

Miller is also an author of a book on beekeeping. According to Miller’s blog, “The wise men of beekeeping would tell me if I wanted to understand the bees, I needed to sit with them (the bees, that is). So, I’d take my coffee out to the bee yard every morning and watch the activity around the hive. And I did learn a lot about bees. But there is more …”
