Cub Scouts collect glasses for mission trip

Every year, several Vol State ophthalmic students are chosen to partake in a mission trip to Guatemala, where they have the opportunity to serve people in need with their knowledge and talents.

In an email from Vol State Ophthalmic Technician Program Director Alisha Cornish, the Cub Scouts Webelos 2 Den from Pack 407 collected between 200 and 300 pairs of glasses for the Volunteer State Community College ophthalmic technician department’s upcoming mission trip to Guatemala. The Webelos Scouts have been working on a project to help the ophthalmic department prepare for the trip.

Homecoming cancelled due to lack of “school spirit”

Volunteer State Community College will not celebrate homecoming this year because, “nobody gets into it. We have a lot of lack of school support,” said Coordinator of Student Activities, Tabitha Sherrell. “ Our athletes don’t get into it. No one shows up for the games.”

While there will be no formal homecoming, the Pioneers last home appearance, a home double header in which both the men and women will play Dyersburg State beginning at 2 p.m., Feb. 16, in Pickel Fieldhouse, will feature some special attractions.

Depleted men’s cagers lose two more

Already reeling from the loss of four players who were ruled academically ineligible over Christmas, the Volunteer State Community College Men’s basketball team now must deal with two players who have left the team.

Sophomore Kevin Rimmer, a starter, and freshman Jayson Brown are no longer with the Pioneers. Rimmer missed four games with an injury to his throat and has elected not to return. Brown left for personal reasons.

Vol State has “handshake agreement” to obtain land for Wilson County expansion

Volunteer State Community College has begun the long and winding road to establishing a satellite campus somewhere in Wilson County.

Campus President Dr. Jerry Faulkner, announced that Vol State has a “handshake” agreement to acquire 10 acres of land in Wilson County at a faculty meeting last week.
During an interview with The Settler, he indicated that the current owner will donate 2.5 acres of that land, leaving the college to come up with funding for the other 7.5 acres.

Why do you believe what you believe?

Faith is an uncomfortable subject for many people. Why is that? We would think that all the talk about diversity would have made talking about faith easier, but even in an atmosphere of tolerance, talking about a person’s religion or belief system tends to cause defensiveness. I think that is because it opens them to the possibility that positions held throughout their lifetime may be weak, which would shake the very foundation of who they are. Be it faith in God, Jesus, Allah, Krishna, or the belief that empirical science has all the answers, people do not want their worldview messed with. Still, the inevitability of our eventual demise is a compelling reason to give the object of our faith some serious thought.
